APART from warning retailers of their liability of paying unpaid fines incurred by truckers in violation of California labour laws, little was accomplished at a recent trucking conference in Long Beach other than to recognise their importance in the life of the harbour.

All were reminded of Senate Bill 1402, signed by Governor Jerry Brown, that creates a public list of companies that commit violations of labour laws. If retailers hire these company they are held liable for unpaid fines, reported the American Journal of Transportation.

Said Harbour Commission President Tracy Egoscue: "Our goal is to make it easier for truckers to do their jobs, reducing turn times and broadening the use of appointments. We understand the difficult work drivers and how critical it is to the goods movement industry and the economy."

Some 17,000 trucks work in the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles. There are nearly 2,000 licensed trucking companies that contract with or employ the truckers who drive at the ports.
