On 2 September, the Transport and Logistics Bureau announced that the Hong Kong Seaport Alliance had completed 8,335 container moves for the Mediterranean Shipping Company's ultra-large container vessel MSC FEBE - establishing a new record for the highest volume of cargo handling operations achieved during a single vessel call at Hong Kong Port.

Under typical operating conditions, ultra-large vessels calling at Hong Kong Port average approximately 3,000 to 4,000 moves per call; the MSC FEBE operation surpassed that conventional benchmark by more than double.

Upon arrival, the vessel berthed at Kwai Tsing Container Terminals, where port operations were maintained at full capacity throughout more than 80 continuous hours of berthing. At peak periods, each ship-to-shore crane averaged in excess of 34 moves per hour - a performance that reflects the terminal's exceptional operational efficiency and logistical coordination capabilities.

Transport and Logistics Secretary Mable Chan commended the port operator for its high-efficiency execution of the assignment. She noted that, despite facing cargo handling demand exceeding twice the daily average, Kwai Tsing Container Terminals delivered on the elevated operational target through agile scheduling and precise coordination - a demonstration of Hong Kong's comprehensive competitiveness as an efficient and dependable international shipping hub, and of its distinctive position within the global maritime trade network. The Secretary further affirmed that the Government will maintain close collaboration with industry stakeholders to strengthen and enhance the service capacity and regional influence of Hong Kong Port, providing stable and efficient logistics support for global supply chains.

The record-setting achievement is not merely a milestone in high-volume cargo handling - it is a reaffirmation of Hong Kong Port's maturity, technical capability, and irreplaceable role as a critical transshipment hub within the global shipping network. As the trend towards ever-larger vessel sizes continues to deepen, port operational efficiency and adaptive scheduling capacity are increasingly recognised as the defining metrics of international hub port competitiveness. Hong Kong Port's successful management of this high-intensity cargo handling challenge stands as compelling evidence of its ability to attract major liner operators and to consolidate its standing as a preeminent regional hub.
