Billund Airport driven by e-commerce

Denmark's Billund Airport is experiencing rapid growth in e-commerce cargo, boosting imports and strengthening its position in the Nordic logistics market, reports London's Air Cargo Week.
Cargo volumes tied to online retail have multiplied in recent years, supported by efficient customs processes and strong trucking partnerships. The airport said e-commerce has changed the scale and rhythm of its cargo business.
Rising imports are creating new opportunities for airlines, reversing Billund's traditional export-heavy profile. Officials said demand is strong but freighter capacity remains the limiting factor in route development.
Logistics Service Billund Airport has expanded into full e-commerce handling, with a dedicated 4,000 sq m facility for depalletisation, customs and onward trucking. The aim is to remove bottlenecks and streamline flows.
Norwegian salmon remains a cornerstone export, with volumes rising thanks to efficient sea-to-air routing and upgraded cooling facilities. Its high density makes it attractive for freighter operators.
Billund is one of only two airports worldwide authorised to use REST screening, which allows sealed cargo units to be checked via air samples analysed by trained dogs. Entire truckloads can be screened in 20 minutes, improving speed and safety.
Seasonal peaks are managed through early planning, flexible staffing and collaboration with customs and trucking firms. Officials said peaks are becoming longer and less predictable, requiring scalable processes.
Collaboration with airlines, forwarders and authorities underpins the airport's cargo strategy. Looking ahead, Billund plans continued investment in infrastructure and Airport City development, with securing additional freighter capacity a top priority.
