Korean Air is planning a major modernisation of its JFK cargo terminal to enhance service quality, efficiency and sustainability on the US East Coast, reported Sydney's Asian Aviation.

The project will be carried out by Lodige Industries, a global leader in cargo terminal automation. Opened in 2000, the facility has a warehouse floor area of 17,065 sq m and an annual handling capacity of 200,000 tons.

Upgrades include two fully automated Elevating Transfer Vehicles for higher-capacity ULD handling, replacement of fixed transfer vehicles with Cargo Pallet Movers, and installation of 14 new workstations.

Cool Chain facilities will also be expanded, with a new refrigerated warehouse and upgrades to existing temperature-controlled areas. Equipment such as controllers, conveyors and shutters will be renewed to improve reliability.

Korean Air said JFK is its gateway for cargo services along the East Coast and a key hub in its global network. The airline said automation will deliver long-term efficiency, higher safety standards and greater sustainability.

Lodige Industries added that the modernised terminal will meet the highest customer demands and strengthen Korean Air's market position as JFK grows in importance for global commerce.
