China Eastern Air Logistics has deployed six high-capacity automated guided vehicles at Cargo Terminal 4 of Shanghai Pudong International Airport in partnership with Lodige Industries, reports London's Air Cargo Week.
The 10ft AGVs, each able to move loads of up to 6.8 tonnes, are integrated with Lodige's Cargo Management System to provide real-time control of unit load device movements. The system aims to enhance efficiency, safety and round-the-clock operations at one of China's busiest cargo hubs.
Weddy Pan of China Eastern said the technology has transformed logistics processes, making them more efficient and adaptable while integrating seamlessly with existing workflows. Nicholas Tripptree of Lodige Industries added the AGV system sets new standards for automation and flexibility in air cargo terminals.
The vehicles reduce reliance on manual transport, optimise routing and enable scalable cargo flows. Manufactured in Germany, all six underwent rigorous testing before delivery. The fleet also works with China's first lift-and-run system, supplied by Lodige, to further boost throughput.
The partnership between China Eastern and Lodige has included earlier projects such as refurbishing an Elevating Transfer Vehicle system and a Transfer Vehicle system, underscoring their shared commitment to innovation and digital transformation in air cargo logistics.
