China has prohibited exports of dual-use items to Japan that could serve military purposes, reports Caixin.

The Ministry of Commerce said shipments to Japanese military users and other end-users that might strengthen Japan's defence capabilities are banned. Violators transferring or providing such goods will face legal consequences.

The decision follows remarks by the Japanese prime minister on Taiwan that have strained relations between the two countries.

A catalogue published in December lists more than 900 items, including rare earths, advanced electronics, aerospace, telecoms, aviation and nuclear-related technology.
