Airlines are moving more pets by air, investing in facilities and welfare standards even as global data remains fragmented, reported Mumbai's STAT Trade Times.

IATA estimates more than four million pets travel by air each year across passenger and cargo flights. Emirates SkyCargo said it carried over 14,600 pets in 2025, while Lufthansa Cargo reported about 12,000, underscoring that pet transport is now a regular part of operations.

Lifestyle changes are driving demand, with more owners using professional services for domestic and international relocations. Dogs account for the largest share, though cat transport is growing faster. Online booking, veterinary support and tracking reflect a shift to structured logistics.

Pets fall under the live animals category, which reached nearly 200,000 consignments in 2024. Strict IATA rules govern handling, containers and welfare. Carriers such as Emirates and Lufthansa have invested in specialised facilities and staff training to meet these standards.

Safety remains a priority, with airlines restricting vulnerable breeds and tightening protocols. Industry veterans note how procedures have advanced from improvisation to precision, reducing risks and improving transparency. Despite limited global data, rising volumes show pet transport is becoming an increasingly important niche in air cargo.
