Philippines President Marcos led the launch of Philippine Airlines' new Airbus A350-1000, the longest aircraft in the flag carrier's fleet, reported Manila's Philippine Star.

The unveiling at Villamor Air Base marked PAL's 85th anniversary and the arrival of the first of nine A350-1000s. The aircraft, seating 382 passengers across three classes, is the first of its type in Southeast Asia and 10th worldwide.

President Marcos said the new-generation aircraft reduces fuel burn by up to 25 per cent, cutting costs and emissions. He added that the move complements government efforts to modernise aviation and adopt sustainable practices.

The president highlighted ongoing airport upgrades, including new terminals at Siargao, Davao and Caticlan, and expansions at Laguindingan and Bohol-Panglao, stressing the role of public-private partnerships in boosting competitiveness.

PAL confirmed it will add five more A350-1000s this year to expand long-haul services. The second aircraft is due in May, with additional flights to Los Angeles starting June 1, raising frequency to 18 per week.

Airbus is scheduled to deliver all nine aircraft by 2027. PAL executives said the A350-1000 is currently regarded as the most cost-efficient option for long-range operations.
