Billionaire Enrique Razon Jr has filed a cyber libel complaint against suspended Cavite Representative Francisco "Kiko" Barzaga over Facebook posts linking him to bribery and corruption, reports UK's Seatrade Maritime News.
The complaint was lodged on January 14 with the Makati City Prosecutor's Office. Razon, chairman of International Container Terminal Services Inc and casino operator Bloomberry Resorts Corp, said Barzaga's January 9 posts accused him of masterminding corruption in Congress and bribing members of the National Unity Party to support former Speaker Martin Romualdez.
Mr Razon denied the allegations, calling them false and reckless. Although the posts have since been deleted, they were widely shared and republished by local media. He is seeking two counts of cyber libel and civil damages of at least PHP100 million (US$1.68 million) for moral damages and PHP10 million in exemplary damages.
Mr Barzaga is already serving a 60-day suspension without pay from the House of Representatives after an ethics committee probe into his use of social media for posting lewd content.
Makati prosecutors will evaluate Razon's complaint to determine if the case will proceed to court.
