Tunisian carrier Cargo Wings Express has leased two Boeing 737-300 freighters from Bulgaria's Cargo Air as it prepares to begin operations, reports London's Air Cargo News.

The aircraft, converted from passenger to freighter, are 38 and 39 years old and currently parked ahead of active service later this year.

Based at Tunis-Carthage International Airport, Cargo Wings Express plans to operate scheduled and charter flights covering general and specialized cargo.

The airline has signed a pilot training partnership with Simaero, focusing on Boeing 737 Classic type ratings and instructor development.

Routes are expected to initially focus on Africa before expanding to other global regions. The company said it employs between 51 and 200 staff.

Tunisia's cargo market includes established operators such as Tunisair Cargo and Express Air Cargo, the latter founded in 2015 with a fleet of three 737-300 freighters serving Africa and Europe.

Cargo Air, which leased the aircraft, also operates for DHL and UPS and provides ad hoc charter flights worldwide, including dangerous goods and outsized loads
