Sub-Saharan Africa's limited air cargo capacity is restricting economic growth and healthcare access, but strengthening freight links could deliver multi-billion dollar benefits, reportf Miami's GetTransport.

The region currently receives just two per cent of global air cargo availability, delaying delivery of medicines and stifling exports of high-value agricultural goods. Analysts said expanding bidirectional routes would boost supply chains, scale exports and improve healthcare access.

Up to 90 per cent of critical drugs and vaccines arrive by air, making reliable cargo services essential. Seasonal spikes in demand during disease outbreaks highlight the need for flexible and dependable transport capacity.

Agricultural exports remain stagnant compared with Asia and Latin America, missing opportunities for jobs and foreign exchange. Experts said optimising inbound pharmaceutical flows alongside outbound perishables would create economic and health synergies.

Industry leaders urged airlines, freight forwarders, pharmaceutical firms and governments to tailor strategies to Africa's needs. Recommendations include targeted cargo capacity plans, resilient cold chain supply routes and supportive industrial policies.

The EU and Asian rivals such as China and India are investing heavily in African logistics hubs, increasing competitive pressure. Analysts said aligning with emerging hubs and expanding capacity could bolster global supply chain reliability.

Strengthening air freight connections would improve delivery of medicines and perishables, driving positive impacts on public health and rural incomes. Reliable cargo services are seen as critical to integrating Africa into global trade networks.
