Specialised aerospace logistics providers play a critical role in aviation, combining strict regulatory compliance with flexibility and proactive delivery, reported London's Air Cargo Week.
The sector is valued at US$14.7 billion globally and is forecast to grow to $19.9 billion by 2029, according to the Aerospace Logistics Services Global Market Report. Providers ensure aircraft parts reach the right place at the right time, operating under stricter standards than many other industries.
FL Technics executives Raimondo Gramaglia and Mazvydas Matazinskas said aerospace logistics demands precision and urgency, especially during Aircraft on Ground (AOG) situations. Planning ahead and leveraging global networks are vital to minimise disruption and costs.
FL Technics operates in 90 countries, giving it access to suppliers, engine shops and customs agents worldwide. Mr Gramaglia described AOGs as crisis management, where delays can cost hundreds of thousands, requiring fast and decisive action.
Aerospace logistics providers serve airlines, lessors, MROs, parts traders and freight forwarders. Airlines with parts hubs can avoid AOGs, while ACMI operators and MROs have distinct needs requiring agile and well-coordinated logistics.
Cargo ranges from small parts worth $30 to engines valued at $5 million. Mr Matazinskas said compliance with dangerous goods regulations is essential. Mr Gramaglia noted that international conventions such as the Montreal Convention provide limited compensation, urging airlines to secure additional insurance.
Providers face predictable challenges such as customs clearance and airside access, which vary by country, and unpredictable ones such as geopolitical conflicts. Raimondo said adaptability is key, with options including road and sea freight when air routes are restricted.
Strong partnerships are crucial. Mazvydas said finding certified and responsive agents is difficult, while Gramaglia noted that being part of Avia Solutions Group provides consistency and access to a global network.
Aerospace logistics requires expertise, flexibility and compliance to meet diverse needs. Deliveries can range from non-urgent shipments by sea to urgent AOG parts requiring immediate transport, with providers prepared to respond to any scenario.
