Chinese operator Cosco Shipping Specialized Carriers has received the world's first Approval in Principle (AiP) certificate for enhanced firefighting safety solutions for battery powered vehicles on pure car and truck carriers (PCTC), reports UK's Seatrade Maritime News.

The certificate was awarded by China Classification Society during Marintec 2025 convention in Shanghai. It marks a breakthrough in maritime safety technology for new energy vehicles and is the first time such measures have been implemented in the design of ocean-going car carriers.

The recognition highlights Cosco Shipping Specialized Carriers' leading role in emergency safety for ro-ro transport of new energy vehicles. It also reflects the wider commitment of Chinese shipping firms to set industry standards and drive global upgrades in maritime safety.

From January to October 2025, China's exports of new energy vehicles reached two million units, up 90.4 per cent year on year. These accounted for 35.87 per cent of total automobile exports, underscoring their importance in China's overseas expansion.

"Maritime transport, as the primary mode of transportation for new energy vehicle exports, requires a high level of safety and professionalism," Cosco Shipping Specialized Carriers said. The company added the certificate sets a benchmark for EV transport safety worldwide and will help the industry move toward safer and greener operations.
