    Shipping industry faces global shortage of qualified seafarers

    The maritime sector could face a shortfall of nearly 90,000 officers by 2026 as fleets expand and become more complex, reports Singapore's Maritime Fairtrade. .


    Eastern Pacific Shipping chief executive Cyril Ducau stressed the need for seafarers able to adapt to advanced technologies such as dual-fuel engines and AI systems. The company plans to expand its workforce to more than 10,000 by opening offices in Manila and China and investing in retention programmes.

    Generational differences are adding pressure, with younger workers preferring shore-based jobs. Wellington Koo of Valles Steamship said recruitment methods must adapt as firms compete with tech and finance sectors offering more stable careers.

    Fleet Management has acquired a maritime academy in India to ensure recruits receive quality training. The company aims to grow its workforce from 4,000 to 6,000 seafarers within two years, highlighting the need for consistent standards.

    A shortage of senior officers is also emerging as experienced seafarers move ashore. Wilhelmsen Ship Management said it seeks not only technical skills but also integrity and leadership qualities.
