Navi Mumbai International Airport will open on December 25 with cargo infrastructure designed to reshape logistics and trade flows in western India, reported Mumbai's STAT Trade Times.
Conceived as a multimodal greenfield airport, NMIA integrates air cargo with road, rail and planned water transport. In its first phase, it will handle 0.5 million tonnes annually, with capacity to rise to 3.25 million tonnes, making it one of India's largest hubs.
Pharmaceuticals and perishables are expected to anchor early volumes. The cargo terminal includes temperature-controlled corridors to preserve cold-chain integrity for vaccines, biologics, seafood and fresh produce, serving manufacturing and food clusters in the Mumbai region.
Facilities also cover dangerous goods, valuables, live animals and on-site offices for Customs and regulators. Certifications such as Regulated Agent, Good Distribution Practise and CEIV will align operations with international standards.
Multimodal connectivity is a key advantage, with proximity to the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, highways, suburban rail, metro and future water transport expected to cut transit times. Dedicated express corridors and automation will support time-sensitive shipments.
Digital systems form a core strategy, with integrated handling platforms and visibility tools aimed at reducing dwell times and improving predictability for shippers.
Aircraft infrastructure has been planned around freighter operations, with seven dedicated parking stands initially and expansion to 11 in the final phase. Aprons will accommodate wide-body cargo aircraft for domestic and long-haul international flows.
