The Manila International Container Terminal has handled a record three million TEU in 2025, marking a first for the Philippines' largest container gateway, reports Amsterdam area's Breakbulk News.
The milestone was reached on December 22 during the call of the 2,900-TEU Ever Bliss. The terminal accounts for about 70 per cent of container traffic at the Port of Manila, underscoring its role as the country's primary trade gateway. Rising volumes are straining berth availability, landside congestion and supply chain reliability.
Manila-based International Container Terminal Services Inc (ICTSI) said the achievement reflects both higher cargo demand and expanded handling capability at its flagship facility. Investments include hybrid rubber tired gantry cranes, additional tractors and trials of electric units. Construction is underway on an eighth berth with a 300 metre quay and 12 hectare yard, designed to handle ships of up to 18,000 TEU.
Three quay cranes for the new berth are due in 2027, when annual handling capacity is expected to rise to 3.5 million TEU. CEO Christian Lozano said the milestone showed MICT's ability to scale operations in line with demand, stressing the importance of consistent service as volumes grow.
Evergreen representatives joined terminal management in marking the three millionth container, highlighting the role of long term carrier partnerships. The expansion comes as Southeast Asian ports face pressure from trade growth, nearshoring and larger vessels. For Manila, where urban congestion limits expansion, berth productivity and yard efficiency will be critical. The next test will come in 2027 with the arrival of new quay cranes.
