Venezuela has dispatched warships to escort departing crude tankers past what it calls a US blockade, reported Fort Lauderdale's Maritime Executive. The move ordered by President Nicolas Maduro raises the risk of confrontation with the US Navy, which has expanded its presence in the Caribbean.

The New York Times said escorts have already accompanied tankers bound for Asia. Analysts warn any attempt at interdiction, such as the US Coast Guard's recent boarding of the tanker Skipper, could now trigger armed clashes instead of peaceful compliance.

International law defines a naval blockade as an act of war, but Washington has not declared war on Venezuela. The blockade remains partial, with merchant ships continuing to trade. The White House has not clarified the scope of its blockade. Critics in Washington question the legality of the campaign. Senate Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said President Trump lacks authority to use military force without congressional approval and warned of bipartisan action to block unauthorised operations.

The US military has been conducting strikes against drug traffickers in the region for months. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said a vessel carrying cocaine was destroyed in the Eastern Pacific this week, killing four people.
