Morocco's new transshipment hub, Nador West Med, could begin operations by late 2026, nearly a year ahead of schedule, reports Fort Lauderdale's Maritime Executive.

Equipment and Water Minister Nizar Baraka told parliament the port is fully ready, with government efforts now focused on road links and regional connectivity.

The plan includes new access routes to northern towns such as Fes, Taourirt and Oujda. Terminal operators are preparing for the launch, with Marsa Maroc partnering CMA Terminals for the West Terminal concession, while MSC Group's Terminal Investment Limited has secured rights to the second container terminal.

Modelled on the success of Tanger Med, Nador West Med is expected to reshape Mediterranean shipping. The port will initially handle 1.8 million TEU annually, rising to 5.5 million TEU in later phases, putting it in direct competition with European hubs such as Algeciras and Valencia.

Spanish authorities have voiced concern that stricter environmental rules in Europe could disadvantage domestic ports against Moroccan rivals. Spain's State Ports agency has warned of traffic losses, while the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras estimates up to 60 per cent of its transshipment volume could shift to Tanger Med under tougher regulations.
