Singapore's air cargo handler SATS is turning to artificial intelligence, simulators and digital tools to prepare its workforce for a rapidly changing aviation sector, reported Taipei's Central News Agency Singapore.

The company is collaborating with universities and polytechnics to develop advanced training systems that replicate real-world airport operations, including rare scenarios staff may not encounter daily. A new learning centre is also planned to modernise training with augmented and virtual reality.

Henry Low, chief executive of SATS Singapore Hub, said the workforce of tomorrow learns differently and must be equipped to thrive in a dynamic environment. He added that jobs should be meaningful and fulfilling, guiding how SATS designs roles.

The initiatives come ahead of the opening of Terminal 5 in the mid-2030s, a mega terminal expected to transform airport operations with automation and smarter systems. SATS has launched its Hub Handler of the Future programme to make ground handling safer, smarter and more connected.

In August, SATS opened a cargo facility with a drive-through concept that cuts processing times by up to 20 per cent. Digitalisation is also streamlining manual processes, enabling higher volumes without increasing workloads.

A July report warned that up to 30 per cent of aviation jobs could be redesigned within five years due to AI. SATS has already redefined 11 roles and is exploring changes in engineering as autonomous vehicles are introduced.

Mr Low emphasised the need for agility, noting Singapore's aviation hub is influenced by global developments. He said SATS aims to build a workforce capable of anticipating shifts, adapting quickly and delivering seamless outcomes for cargo and passenger operations.
