East Midlands Airport reported an 11.4 per cent rise in cargo volumes between May and October, reaching nearly 240,000 tonnes, following the launch of its cargo development programme earlier this year, reported London's Air Cargo News.
The increase represents 25,000 tonnes more than the same period in 2024. Airport officials said the busiest season is still ahead, with cargo flight movements expected to rise 63 per cent in the coming weeks due to Black Friday, Cyber Monday and pre-Christmas demand.
EMA's long-term plan aims to meet a projected 54 per cent increase in demand over two decades, lifting volumes from 400,000 tonnes to 583,000 tonnes by 2043. Four plots totalling 50 hectares have been earmarked for development, potentially supporting 21,000 jobs and adding nearly GBP4 billion to the economy.
Since May, six new cargo airlines have joined EMA - Central Airlines, Atlas Air, Ethiopian Cargo, Saudia Cargo, Etihad Cargo and SF Express - with a seventh expected. Swissport and FedEx have expanded facilities, while One Air has shifted operations from Heathrow, adding charter services and expanding its fleet.
Adam Andrews, the airport's new commercial director, said the momentum reflects EMA's growing global reputation and strategic role in logistics. He described the expansion as transformation rather than simple growth, adding that the airport's 24/7 operations and freighter expertise will underpin the UK's largest dedicated air cargo development scheme.
