Tencent Holdings said it is making constructive progress in talks with Apple over revenue sharing from mini-games on its WeChat app, a move that could reshape China's mobile gaming market, reported Caixin.

Tencent President Martin Lau told investors during the company's third-quarter earnings call that discussions with Apple aim to build a more active mini-game ecosystem. He added that a formal announcement will be made in the future.

Market rumours last August suggested Apple was pressuring Tencent to close loopholes that allowed users to make payments outside its system. At the time, Tencent confirmed it was negotiating with Apple over fee arrangements for mini-games on iOS.

Mr Lau's comments suggest a possible resolution to the dispute over Apple's 30 per cent commission on in-app purchases, often referred to as the "Apple tax." The policy has long caused friction with superapps such as WeChat, which rely heavily on in-game transactions and advertising.

Mini-games have proliferated within platforms like WeChat and ByteDance's Douyin, typically generating revenue through in-app purchases and advertising.
