French shipping giant CMA CGM has signed a term sheet to acquire a 20 per cent stake in Eurogate Container Terminal Hamburg, strengthening its position in Northern Europe's shipping market, reported a company press release.

The deal, expected to close in the first half of 2026 subject to regulatory approval, will expand CMA CGM's footprint in Germany, a key hub for European and global trade.

Eurogate's Hamburg terminal currently handles four million TEU annually and is undergoing a Western Expansion project that will add 38 hectares and 1,050 metres of quay wall, lifting capacity to nearly six million TEU.

CMA CGM already calls at the terminal through its FAL service linking Asia and Northern Europe with 23,000 TEU LNG-powered vessels. The investment aligns with the group's strategy to broaden its infrastructure portfolio and support low-carbon supply chains.

Rodolphe Saade, chairman and chief executive, said the partnership will enhance capacity, strengthen rail connections and support sustainable operations, reflecting confidence in Germany's competitiveness.

CMA CGM has operated in Germany since 1991, with offices in Hamburg and Bremen. Today it runs nine offices and 23 weekly vessel calls across Hamburg, Bremerhaven and Wilhelmshaven, supported by CEVA Logistics, Inland Services and the Duisburg Trimodal Terminal.

The group said the investment underscores its commitment to Germany's role in European trade and to advancing decarbonisation and efficiency in supply chains.
