Brussels has urged EU finance ministers to approve an EU-wide handling fee on small parcels from online platforms such as Shein, Temu and Alibaba by early 2026, more than two years ahead of schedule, reported London's Financial Times. The measure is aimed at curbing billions of cheap Chinese imports and protecting European retailers from unfair competition.

The European Commission pressed ministers to accelerate the plan, warning that domestic businesses face mounting pressure from low-cost shipments flooding the market.

Trade commissioner Maros Sefcovic said in a letter to ministers that the step was vital to strengthen the bloc's position amid fast-changing trade realities.

Mr Sefcovic added that the earlier introduction of the fee would demonstrate Europe's determination to boost competitiveness and ensure fair conditions for its companies.
