Importers in eastern Nigeria will benefit from shorter transit times and lower freight costs after the maiden direct vessel from China and the Far East, with a capacity of 5,089 TEU, berthed at the Onne Multipurpose Terminal in Rivers State, reported the Lagos Guardian.
The Liberian-flagged MSC Dorine V arrived at Onne Port on November 9, marking a significant shift in Nigeria's shipping dynamics and strengthening the eastern maritime corridor.
OMT managing director Nicolo Scannavini said the vessel, with a deadweight tonnage of 68,383 tonnes and length of 294 metres, is among the largest containerships to call at an eastern Nigerian port. He noted the direct service eliminates delays linked to transshipment, cutting costs and improving reliability.
Mr Scannavini added that agents, manufacturers and traders will benefit from faster supply chains and expanded commercial opportunities. He said larger vessels stimulate jobs, competitiveness and growth through economies of scale.
He urged the Nigerian Ports Authority to accelerate dredging works at Onne, including a second turning basin and deeper draft access, to accommodate even larger ships and cement the port's role as a strategic hub for the South-South and eastern region.
MSC regional manager Oscar Aguocha described the call as proof of the company's long-term commitment to the eastern market, which he said has grown by 27 per cent year-on-year. He noted shipments from China and Eastern Asia can now arrive in 40 to 42 days, offering speed, certainty and cost-efficiency.
