French shipping giant CMA CGM has advised customers of major changes to the EU Emissions Trading System that will affect its operations and Energy Transition Surcharge from next year, reports London's Port Technology International.
The EU ETS requires carriers to monitor and report CO2 emissions on voyages to and from EU ports, with a portion already subject to cap-and-trade rules aimed at cutting emissions across the maritime sector.
From 2026, the scheme will cover 100 per cent of CMA CGM's CO2 emissions, up from 70 per cent in 2025, and will extend to other greenhouse gases.
The company said the expansion will significantly affect its cost structure, with surcharge levels expected to rise 43 per cent. The estimate does not include possible fluctuations in CO2 prices.
CMA CGM will publish Q1 2026 surcharge amounts for all trades covered by the EU ETS on December 1, 2025.
The carrier said the changes highlight the EU's commitment to climate action and a lower-carbon future, adding it will maintain transparency as the framework develops.
