The global shipping industry is facing a growing shortage of qualified seafarers as demand outpaces supply, according to Henrik Jensen, CEO of Danica Crewing Specialists, reports the Manila Times.
Speaking at the 2025 Global Crew Connect event, Mr Jensen said traditional hiring strategies are no longer sufficient as shipowners impose stricter requirements while the pool of qualified candidates shrinks.
He noted Filipino seafarers remain a vital resource, with about 250 among Danica's 1,500 to 1,700 crew management pool. Mr Jensen highlighted their professionalism as essential to maintaining global fleet operations.
To address the talent gap, Danica is expanding recruitment into new markets, particularly Kenya and other African nations, aiming to build sustainable crewing solutions beyond traditional sources.
Mr Jensen said developing Kenya as a long-term provider of trained maritime professionals is part of a wider industry shift to meet rising qualification standards.
He stressed that continuous education and adaptability are critical for modern seafarers, calling for enhanced training to prepare crews for new technologies and alternative fuel systems.
Industry leaders argue that innovative recruitment strategies and a focus on future readiness will be vital to maintaining operational excellence and safety in increasingly complex global maritime operations.
