Less than a week after a fire struck a container vessel at the Port of Los Angeles, another blaze has been reported at Delaware's fruit terminal involving the Chiquita Voyager, injuring four crew members, reports Johannesburg's Freight News.
The incident occurred on November 26, about 48 hours after the Los Angeles fire aboard ONE's Henry Hudson was contained. Smoke was seen rising from the Chiquita Voyager's superstructure, prompting port workers to alert emergency services.
Fire crews from Wilmington, New Castle County and mutual-aid departments responded, with nearly seventy personnel involved in the operation. Officials said the vessel's suppression systems activated quickly, helping to confine the blaze to the engine room.
Firefighters entered the compartment in teams and worked for three hours to bring the fire under control. Additional crew remained on site through the afternoon to monitor hot spots and assist investigators.
Four crew members were taken to Christiana Hospital for treatment. Their conditions have not yet been disclosed. Port authorities confirmed no structural damage to terminal facilities and said cargo operations nearby continued under precautionary restrictions.
Investigators are examining the cause of the fire, with early indications pointing to mechanical failure in engine room machinery. The Chiquita Voyager, a 2,750-TEU vessel, is a regular caller at Wilmington, a key hub for refrigerated fruit imports into the United States.
