The Port of Skikda in Algeria is undergoing a major expansion programme to boost container handling capacity to 600,000 TEU annually, reported Saint Petersburg's PortNews.
The plan, led by national authorities and executed by the port authority EPS, centres on a new terminal initially providing 240,000 TEU per year. The project is being developed on infrastructure originally intended for hydrocarbons expansion, with 80 per cent of the quay already complete.
Technical specifications include a 323-metre berth, a 15.4-metre draft for large vessels and a 15-hectare storage area. Equipment will comprise three STS quay gantry cranes, 10 RTG cranes, three reach stackers, three triplex forklifts and 24 terminal tractors.
Cargo inspection will use two mobile scanners processing 120 units per hour, alongside a customs area sized for 300 containers daily. A reefer zone for 480 units is also planned. Operations are expected to begin around 2027, supporting Algeria's maritime trade and regional role.
The Port of Skikda, located in northeastern Algeria, manages cargo handling and industrial services under national port administration. EPS, the state-owned operator, oversees port services, infrastructure and planning in coordination with regulatory authorities.
