The UK P&I Club has begun merger talks with affiliated port insurer TT Club, aiming to create the largest maritime mutual of its kind, reports Fort Lauderdale's Maritime Executive.
Both insurers, managed by Thomas Miller, said integration would strengthen their service offering and accelerate shared strategic goals. The combined entity would retain both brands, while UK P&I would remain a member of the International Group of P&I insurers.
UK P&I chairman Jan Valkier said the merger would deliver a market-leading maritime and transport insurance mutual with enhanced financial strength.
Talks began in November and remain at an early stage, with further discussions expected in coming months.
The move follows a difficult 2024 policy year for UK P&I, which faced several major claims including the boxship Dali allision with the Francis Scott Key Bridge. Despite this, membership stayed strong with 162 million gross tonnes in the pool for 2025-6.
Thomas Miller manages both clubs and other specialist insurers, including the UK War Risks Club, Hellenic War Risks Club and offshore insurer Navata. It also owns Brookes Bell, a marine consultancy often engaged in salvage and arbitration cases.
