Swissport International has launched operations in China through a strategic partnership to manage and jointly operate a next-generation cargo terminal at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, reports London's Air Cargo Week.
The agreement with Smargo-a joint venture between AVINEX Logistics and China Eastern Airlines Logistics-marks Swissport's flagship operation in Asia and a key step in its global air cargo strategy. The signing ceremony took place on October 21.
The new Digital & Intelligent International Cargo Terminal is located in the West Cargo Area of Pudong Airport, the world's second-largest air cargo hub. Covering 222,000 square metres, the facility represents a total investment of CNY1.56 billion (US$215 million) and is expected to handle up to 1.2 million tons of cargo annually from late 2025.
The terminal features AI-driven warehouse management, 94 autonomous vehicles, and 15,000 square metres of temperature-controlled space, including a 200 sqm ultra-deep freeze chamber. It is designed to support pharmaceutical and biomedical shipments with GDP and CEIV Pharma certifications.
Swissport's global e-commerce network will connect Shanghai to major markets, enabling faster delivery for Chinese exporters. The terminal's automated sorting systems can process 3,500 parcels per hour, tripling conventional throughput and cutting delivery times by up to 40 per cent.
The Shanghai launch complements Swissport's recent expansion at New York JFK and forms part of a strategic network linking Asia, North America and Europe. Swissport plans to explore further opportunities in China to build a comprehensive cargo network across major commercial centres.
