China's efforts to promote green shipping are helping stabilise global trade amid rising geopolitical and economic uncertainty, opined Beijing's Global Times.

The country launched a new initiative at the 2025 North Bund Forum in Shanghai to foster international cooperation on low-carbon shipping corridors.

The Ministry of Transport announced plans to establish a green corridor between Qingdao Port and Germany's Port of Hamburg. The move reflects China's commitment to open collaboration and sustainable maritime development.

While rising port fees in the US are adding pressure to global supply chains, China is advancing digital and green transformation in its maritime sector. These efforts aim to reduce logistics costs and enhance long-term industry resilience.

According to Xinhua, China has maintained its top global ranking in maritime connectivity for several years. Its expanding port networks and international partnerships are seen as stabilising forces in global trade.

China's green shipping strategy includes policy guidance, infrastructure upgrades, and technological innovation. The country is integrating clean energy and smart systems into port operations to improve efficiency and reduce emissions.

In February, China State Shipbuilding Corp unveiled a 64,500-kilowatt methanol-diesel dual-fuel engine that cuts carbon dioxide emissions by over 7.5 per cent. The engine also supports 5G-based real-time monitoring for improved performance.

Major ports such as Shanghai and Ningbo-Zhoushan are expanding green fuel infrastructure and upgrading to low-carbon operations. Despite global disruptions, China continues to modernise its domestic port facilities.

China's pragmatic approach to international cooperation includes promoting new-energy vessels, emissions reduction, and digital shipping management. The green corridor initiative underscores its leadership in sustainable maritime development.
