A memorial has been unveiled in York, Western Australia, marking the 75th anniversary of the 1950 Amana crash, one of Australia's worst peacetime aviation disasters, reports ABC News.
On 26 June 1950, the Australian National Airlines Douglas DC-4 Amana crashed into bushland near York, about 100 kilometres east of Perth, just 10 minutes after takeoff. All 28 passengers and crew died, with the sole survivor passing away days later.
The new memorial includes a replica of the aircraft and a plaque made from stone recovered at the crash site. Locals had rushed to the scene after witnessing the low-flying aircraft.
Diana Iles, whose father Vincent Finegan was among the victims, recalled being six years old when she was told he had "gone to heaven." Finegan, a 37-year-old electrical engineer, had boarded the flight early to return home for her birthday.
Ms Iles said she grieved her father for most of her life and later travelled to Western Australia to visit York and meet Colin McNamara, one of the first responders. She found comfort connecting with other victims' families and historians.
Though she lived in New South Wales, Ms Iles said she felt a deep connection to York, noting its name reminded her of her birthplace in Yorkshire, England.
The crash remains one of Australia's deadliest aviation incidents. Another disaster in 1960 claimed 29 lives when a Trans Australia Airlines flight went down off Queensland's coast.
