    Rotterdam bunker volumes dip as biofuels and LNG surge

    The Port of Rotterdam reported a decline in total bunker and biofuel blend sales in Q3 2025, while biofuels and LNG volumes hit new records, reported Saint Petersburg's Port News.


    Total bunker and biofuel sales reached 2.33 million tonnes, down 2.8 per cent from Q2 and four per cent year on year. In contrast, Singapore posted a 7.4 per cent annual increase in similar volumes.

    Biofuel bunker sales rose 20.1 per cent quarter on quarter and 44.7 per cent year on year to 198,515 mt, the highest since Q2 2024. LNG bunker sales climbed 34.7 per cent on the quarter and 22.8 per cent year on year to 270,254 cubic metres, surpassing the previous record.

    Bio-LNG sales fell to 960 cubic metres from 4,752 cubic metres in Q2. Bio-methanol sales dropped to 2,371 mt from 3,958 mt.

    Conventional VLSFO sales declined 24.1 per cent year on year to 635,638 tonnes, while HSFO dipped 3.8 per cent to 872,077 tonnes. ULSFO rose 12 per cent to 232,720 tonnes. MGO increased 36.3 per cent to 311,235 tonnes, and MDO fell 28.6 per cent to 75,938 tonnes.

    HSFO accounted for 37 per cent of total conventional and biofuel sales, up from 34 per cent in Q3 2024.

    For the first nine months of 2025, total bunker and biofuel blend sales reached 7.02 million tonnes, slightly below the 7.09 million tonnes recorded in the same period last year.

    The Port of Rotterdam Authority, jointly owned by the Municipality of Rotterdam and the Dutch State, oversees port operations, infrastructure, safety and environmental compliance.
