A massive fire broke out at the Cargo Village of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Saturday afternoon, prompting the suspension of all flights and a large-scale emergency response, reports the Press Trust of India.

The blaze began around 2:30 p.m. near Gate No 8, sending thick grey smoke across the area and alarming passengers and nearby residents. The fire erupted in the Cargo Village, where imported goods are stored before clearance.

Airport Executive Director Masudul Hasan Masud said emergency measures were initiated by 3:45pm, with multiple agencies responding swiftly to the scene.

The Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence, supported by the Air Force, launched a joint operation. According to Talha Bin Zasim from the Fire Service media cell, 28 firefighting units were deployed, up from the initial nine.

The Bangladesh Navy and two Border Guard Bangladesh platoons later joined the effort, coordinated by the Inter-Services Public Relations. The Civil Aviation Authority also took part in the operation.

Despite the scale of the fire, airport officials confirmed no damage to aircraft or passenger terminals. All individuals in the affected area were safely evacuated, and no casualties were reported.

As a safety measure, all flight operations-both arrivals and departures-were suspended. Authorities have not yet announced when services will resume.
