Avianca Cargo has added an Airbus A330 passenger-to-freighter (P2F) aircraft to its fleet to support growing demand for flower shipments from South America to global markets, reports London's Air Cargo News.

The A330P2F, with a payload capacity of over 60 tonnes, will operate in coordination with Avianca Cargo M矇xico. The Mexican unit was launched in June by AeroUnion, a subsidiary of Avianca Cargo, to connect Mexico and the US west coast with international air freight hubs.

Avianca Cargo now operates nine freighters, including six A330Fs and three A330P2Fs. The new aircraft offers fuel efficiency and flexibility for medium-haul routes, making it well-suited for perishables transport.

Chief executive Diogo Elias said the fleet expansion reaffirms the airline's commitment to connectivity and service. Avianca Cargo serves more than 350 destinations and continues to grow its global network.

In 2025, the airline transported over 100,000 tonnes of flowers from Ecuador and Colombia to the US, Europe and Asia. To support this sector, Avianca Cargo invested in an 850 sq m Jetfloor facility at Medellin Airport, boosting handling capacity by 50 per cent.

The company also upgraded its Miami cooler facility, improving temperature control and increasing capacity by 83 per cent. Mr Elias said Avianca Cargo achieved eight per cent growth during peak seasons, setting a record in US-bound flower shipments.

To further support flower volumes, Avianca Cargo added two weekly freighter flights to Maastricht Aachen Airport this month.
