Union Pacific has secured support from another labour union for its proposed merger with Norfolk Southern after the National Conference of Firemen and Oilers agreed to job guarantees, reports American Shipper.

The agreement ensures that hundreds of NCFO members employed at the time of the merger will retain jobs for the length of their careers, subject to standard employment requirements.

NCFO president Michael Pistone said the merger offers long-term stability, expanded opportunities and improved working conditions. He added that combining resources and expertise would enhance job security and create pathways for member growth.

Union Pacific CEO Jim Vena said the deal reaffirms the company's promise that all union employees with jobs at the time of the merger will keep them for life. He thanked NCFO leaders and members for their support.

Union Pacific had earlier reached a similar agreement with the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, and Transportation Workers-Transportation Division, covering SMART-TD members in train and yardmaster service. That union also pledged to back the merger with Norfolk Southern.
