Poland has unveiled plans for a new deepwater container terminal at Swinoujscie, aiming to establish the country's second major hub after Gdansk, reports Delaware's DredgeWire.

The Deepwater Container Terminal Swinoujscie will be part of the 186 ha Cape Pomerania development and is designed to handle the world's largest boxships. Annual capacity is projected at two million TEU.

The facility will feature a 17-metre deep approach, 2,900 metres of quays and a 70 kilometre access fairway suitable for vessels up to 400 metres long. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027 and finish by 2029, following dredging of 19 million tonnes of seabed.

The US$2.35 billion investment includes a 47 ha logistics zone, ten 800-metre rail tracks and a two kilometre access road to ease urban traffic. New rail and road systems will support the terminal's operations.

The Szczecin-Swinoujscie Seaports Authority will oversee marine and landside infrastructure and will seek a terminal operator via open tender. A prior lease deal with a Belgian-Qatari consortium was cancelled due to financing issues.

ZMPSiS chief executive Jaros?aw Siergiej said the project is "the most ambitious in our 75-year history" and will elevate Poland into "the Champions League of European ports."
