LUFTHANSA Cargo expanded its freight capacity for Deutsche Post AG to help transport the enormous volume of Christmas mail and parcels between Germany and the USA smoothly and on time.
From mid-November until December 19, an MD-11 took off every Monday to serve the Frankfurt-New York-Frankfurt route - resulting in the Atlantic being crossed a total of six times in each direction - exclusively for Deutsche Post. Sixty tonnes of freight were carried on each flight.
Lufthansa Cargo chief product officer Alexis von Hoensbroech said that during the six-week period before Christmas its Airmail/eCommerce product is in great demand for packages sent on short notice and time-sensitive shipments.
"For this reason, we increased our capacity exclusively for our close partner Deutsche Post AG in recent years. However, 2017 is a special situation as we have never before organised so much additional cargo space on such short notice," said Mr von Hoensbroech in a company statement.
In addition, Lufthansa Cargo said it supports many small and medium-sized companies and eCommerce platforms in Germany to gain access to "the major global players during the time of year with the highest turnover."
