The Airforwarders Association has warned that the US government's cancellation of 13 Mexican airline routes could severely disrupt cross-border air cargo capacity, reports Mumbai's STAT Trade Times.

US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that several Mexican carriers will no longer operate passenger flights into the United States, removing vital belly-hold cargo space from the market.

The US Department of Transportation said air freight trade between the US, Mexico and Canada totalled US$6.1 billion in July 2025, up 22.9 per cent from July 2024, underscoring the growing role of air cargo in regional trade.

Association executive director Brandon Fried said flight cancellations will impact shipments of spare parts, produce and medical supplies, straining already tight supply chains.

Mr Fried urged both governments to seek a swift and balanced resolution that maintains freight connectivity and supports fair competition without compromising cargo access.

The association represents hundreds of freight forwarders who rely on consistent international air service to move essential goods across North America.
