DP World has committed an additional US$5 billion to expand its logistics and terminal operations in India, reports New York's Journal of Commerce.
The announcement was made during a maritime conclave in Mumbai. The new investment builds on the US$3 billion already deployed by the Dubai-based operator in India's marine terminal and multimodal logistics sectors.
Chairman Ahmed bin Sulayem said the move reinforces DP World's long-standing role in India's trade growth and aims to strengthen the country's position in global logistics.
The company plans to explore opportunities in coastal shipping, shipbuilding, repair, and advanced freight services. Its subsidiary Unifeeder may expand its locally flagged fleet, having acquired Shreyas Shipping in 2020.
Drydocks World, another DP World unit, intends to establish a ship repair cluster in Cochin, extending operations beyond port terminals.
DP World currently operates five container terminal concessions across four Indian ports and is constructing a $550 million terminal near Kandla Port with a 2.2 million TEU annual capacity, set to begin phase one operations in 2027.
In 2024, DP World handled 5.4 million TEUs in India, accounting for 22 per cent of the country's total container throughput.
The investment reflects growing interest from global logistics firms in India as a maritime hub. Maersk, for example, is exploring local container manufacturing through a potential partnership with DCM Shriram, which has ties to Hyundai Mobis.
