A UPS cargo plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Louisville's Muhammad Ali International Airport on November 4, killing at least seven people and injuring several others, reported USA Today.

UPS confirmed three crew members were aboard Flight 2976, which departed from the company's Worldport hub, the world's largest automated package sorting facility. The crash is the deadliest in UPS Airlines' history since its founding in 1988.

Prior to this incident, UPS Airlines had two fatal crashes. In 2010, a Boeing 747-400F caught fire and crashed near Dubai, killing both crew members. In 2013, an Airbus A300-600F crashed near Birmingham, Alabama, also killing both crew members. Pilot fatigue and instability were cited as contributing factors.

UPS operates nearly 2,000 flights daily, with around 350 flights passing through Louisville. Its fleet includes 300 company-owned jets and 200 chartered aircraft.

FedEx Express has also experienced fatal crashes. In 2009, Flight 80 crashed on landing in Narita, Japan, killing both crew members. In 1994, a hijacking attempt aboard Flight 705 was thwarted by the crew, and the aircraft remains in service.

Non-American cargo carriers have faced deadly incidents. Ukraine Air Alliance Flight 4050 crashed in 2019 near Lviv, killing five. That same year, a Boeing 707 operated by Iran's Saha Airlines crashed, killing 15 of 16 aboard.

In 2002, DHL Flight 611 collided midair with Bashkirian Airlines Flight 2937 near the German-Swiss border, killing all 71 people. Investigators found the Bashkirian crew failed to follow collision avoidance system instructions.
