Delta Air Lines will invest up to US$18 million to modernise its cargo terminal at Salt Lake City International Airport, one of its key passenger hubs, reports New York's FreightWaves.

The Utah Inland Port Authority is providing a loan for the project, which will see Delta relocate to a former US Postal Service facility. The upgrade is expected to enhance cargo operations significantly.

The new terminal, scheduled to open in 2027, will include warehousing, refrigerated storage, shipping and receiving areas, administrative offices, and a customer lobby. Cold-chain capabilities will support temperature-sensitive goods such as pharmaceuticals and perishables.

Utah officials said the infrastructure improvement will benefit local manufacturers by enabling direct shipment routing, reducing reliance on coastal gateways.

Delta operates 255 departures from Salt Lake City on its busiest day, serving nearly 100 global destinations. This year, it added direct flights to Lima and Seoul.

The airline earned $233 million in cargo revenue in the third quarter, up 19 per cent year-on-year. Revenue rose 14 per cent over the first nine months of 2025.

Other US carriers are also expanding cargo infrastructure. Southwest Airlines opened a US$28 million facility in Denver in June, while United Airlines moved into a 165,000 square-foot cargo site near Newark last year.
