The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and JFK Millennium Partners have teamed up with Fortbrand Services LLC to manage an all-electric ground support fleet at John F. Kennedy International Airport's new Terminal 6, reports Saint Petersburg's PortNews.

The initiative will make JFK the first airport in North America to operate a pooled electric ground support fleet. The equipment is projected to cut around 2,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually - equivalent to driving a petrol car six million miles.

The electric fleet will replace diesel-powered units and allow airlines to share equipment across the terminal's 10 gates, reducing duplication and improving efficiency.

Real-time monitoring will be handled by JFK Millennium Partners and Fortbrand using telematics software to track battery status, GPS location, driver access and other operational metrics. Charging will be available both on-site and remotely.

Executive director Rick Cotton said the move supports the Port Authority's goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. Chairman Kevin O'Toole highlighted the adoption of new technologies, while JFK Millennium Partners CEO Steve Thody called the programme "innovative" and COO Karen Ali noted its efficiency gains.

Terminal 6 is under construction, with six gates scheduled to open in 2026 and full completion expected by 2028.
