Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary has warned that the Russia-Ukraine war will continue to disrupt European aviation for years, following drone incursions into Polish airspace, reports Reuters.
Speaking at the airline's annual general meeting in Dublin, O'Leary said only 60 per cent of Ryanair flights were on time on Wednesday, compared to the usual 90 per cent. He cited widespread disruption to air-traffic control across Europe, particularly affecting flights from Scandinavia and the Baltic states.
The delays followed Poland's decision to shoot down suspected Russian drones, prompting temporary closures at Warsaw Chopin, Modlin, Rzeszow and Lublin airports. NATO aircraft including Polish F-16s, Dutch F-35s and Italian AWACS were deployed in the operation.
Mr O'Leary said the incident, which marked the first known NATO engagement during the war, was discussed by Ryanair's board on Wednesday. He called for tougher sanctions against Russia, saying: "We expect more disruptions unless the EU and the White House take firm action."
He added that Russia's tactics would remain a persistent "irritant" for European airlines and citizens. The conflict has already caused significant operational challenges for carriers across the continent.
