Deutsche Post resumes US parcel shipping

Germany's Deutsche Post will restart parcel shipments to the United States and Puerto Rico for business customers, four weeks after suspending service due to changes in US customs rules, reports New York's FreightWaves.
The Trump administration ended the de minimis exemption for commercial goods under US$800 on 29 August, requiring upfront duty payments and detailed customs data. The exemption had allowed low-value imports to enter duty free with minimal paperwork.
The rule change led to an 80 per cent drop in postal traffic to the US, according to the Universal Postal Union. Nearly 90 postal operators halted some or all shipments, citing lack of integration with US Customs and Border Protection's automated systems.
Deutsche Post, also known as Post and Parcel Germany, will now offer a "postal delivered duty paid" service, previously available only for Norway, the UK and Switzerland. The service requires businesses to submit full customs data, including tariff codes and origin details.
DHL said it will charge EUR2 (US$2.36) for the pre-paid duty service, passing on transport and customs fees without markup. The company said additional costs are driven by external factors beyond its control.
Individuals may still send gifts duty free to the US if valued at US$100 or less. Australia Post resumed similar services earlier this week.
