The Airforwarders Association has voiced deep concern over the impact of the US Federal Government shutdown on air cargo operations, citing risks to supply chain stability, reported London's Air Cargo News.

The shutdown, triggered by a political impasse over spending plans, is the first in over seven years. While essential services like air traffic control and Customs will continue, furloughs among support staff may delay route approvals and certifications.

The association warned that disruptions could lead to delays and added costs across the supply chain. It urged policymakers to resolve the impasse swiftly, stressing that air cargo infrastructure is vital to the economy and communities.

Executive director Brandon Fried said freight forwarders are helping shippers navigate instability caused by tariffs, regulatory reforms and compliance demands. The AfA will continue monitoring the situation and updating its members.

The last shutdown in December 2018 lasted 35 days, making it the longest in US history. Forwarders fear similar disruptions could undermine cargo flow and planning.
