Jiangxin Shipyard in Jiangxi has launched the first of two all-electric feeder vessels ordered by Ningbo Ocean Shipping in May 2024, reports London's Ship Technology.
The vessel, now undergoing outfitting and sea trials, is expected to be delivered in early 2026. It is believed to be the largest all-electric vessel built in China to date.
Designed by Shanghai Ship Research and Design Institute, the vessel will operate under Ningbo Ocean Shipping, a Shanghai-based subsidiary of Ningbo-Zhoushan Port Group.
While Cosco has previously introduced electric inland box ships, the Ningbo feeders are expected to be the largest oceangoing all-electric vessels in Chinese waters.
The vessel has a capacity of 742 TEU and measures 127.8 metres in length, 21.6 metres in beam, 10.5 metres in depth, with a design draft of 6.2 metres.
Propulsion is provided by 10 containerised battery units capable of high-voltage shore charging and fast battery-swapping, generating up to 19,000 KWh. These power two 875 KW permanent magnet motors, enabling speeds up to 11.5 knots.
The ship is equipped with an intelligent integrated platform and smart engine room, supporting autonomous navigation, real-time situational awareness, collision avoidance, and multiple driving modes.
