ABU DHABI's AD Ports Group has contacted Mar Construction Civil & Obras Publicas to design and build the topside and marine infrastructure for the Noatum Ports Luanda Terminal in Angola's largest port, reports London's Port Technology International.

Additionally, Dar Al Handasah Consultants Shair & Partners will provide Project Management and Construction Supervision Services.

The Port of Luanda handles 76 per cent of Angola's container and general cargo, serving as a vital gateway for landlocked countries like the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia.

Under a 20-year concession agreement signed in April 2024, AD Ports will invest $250 million by 2026 to modernise the terminal.

From February, the group began managing the multipurpose terminal, marking its expansion into sub-Saharan Africa and reinforcing its commitment to regional logistics infrastructure.

The modernisation project will transform the terminal into a facility for general cargo, containers and ro-ro operations.

With 16 metres alongside, it will be the only terminal at the Port of Luanda capable of handling vessels of 14,000 TEU.

The 192,000 square metres terminal will be upgraded with advanced technology, and the works are expected to be completed by Q1 2027.

Upon completion, container capacity will increase from 25,000 TEU to 350,000 TEU, with ro-ro volumes exceeding 40,000 vehicles.

Said AD Ports Group regional chief Mohamed Eidha Tannaf AlMenhali: "This modernisation initiative will not only transform Noatum Ports Luanda Terminal into a state-of-the-art facility but also significantly enhance its capacity and efficiency."
