INTERNATIONAL Container Terminal Services Inc's (ICTSI) Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT) in Melbourne, has acquired four new hybrid automatic yard box carriers (ACCs), reports the Manila Times.

Each ACC has a twin-box lifting capacity of up to 60 tons and hybrid technology from provider Kalmar, including lithium-ion batteries for energy recovery. The technology is expected reduce CO2 emissions by 50 tons per carrier annually.

"We value our partnership with Kalmar and their technical support," VICT chief executive Bruno Porchietto said.

"These new hybrid carriers are part of our expansion to increase capacity to 1.5 million TEU annually, ensuring we can meet growing demand," he said.

VICT is the only fully automated container terminal in the southern hemisphere. It operates seven remotely controlled ship-to-shore cranes (five super postpanamax and two ultra postpanamax - the largest in Australia), 17 ACCs, and 26 automated stacking cranes (ASCs).

The latest investment follows a record year for VICT in 2024, wherein it handled its five millionth TEU since opening in 2017
