NEWLY merged classification society DNV GL has approved of GTT/Technolog LNG fuel tank design for VLC retrofits, reports Seatrade Maritime News, of Colchester, England.
Continuing to develop its LNG as a marine fuel business GTT and its partner Technolog have received General Approval and Ship Application (GASA) from DNV GL to retrofit of very large container vessels (VLCs) with exoskeleton membrane LNG tanks.
LNG membrane tanks take up less space than other types of storage and the exoskeleton concept can be pre-built on the dock before being retrofitted onto an existing vessel eliminating the need for drydocking.
The solution has been developed for existing containerships in the 14,000- to 18,000-TEU range.
Operating on regular trading routes on the Asia - Europe trade VLCS are seen as good candidates for conversion to LNG as a marine as the bunkering infrastructure develops on the trade lane.
